Ideal boilers are available in a number of different types, with SEDBUK ("Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the United Kingdom") ratings ranging from "A" in the case of high efficiency "combi" or combination boilers to "C" or "D" in the case of standard efficiency boilers.
Combi boilers for example may be attractive to owners of smaller properties because they require no cold or hot water storage tanks but are still extremely energy efficient and economical. The Ideal Esprit boiler is a combi boiler rated "A" for energy efficiency but, nevertheless, designed to be as simple as possible to install, maintain and control.
High efficiency boilers need not necessarily be combi boilers. Ideal boilers include the Classic HE ("High Efficiency") range which employ a conventional cast iron heat exchanger and provide hot water via a copper storage cylinder. The Ideal Icos System HE boiler is as the name suggests a system boiler. It can incorporate a sealed, pumped heating system which is versatile enough to be accommodated in many different types of property.
Part L1 Building Regulations stipulate that any new or replacement boilers installed in England or Wales nowadays must be of the HE ("High Efficiency") type. However, it may be possible to install an SE ("Standard Efficiency") boiler in exceptional circumstances and Ideal boilers – Classic SE, Mini C and Mini S – are available in this category. Subject to rigorous checking procedures and a points system to determine the suitability of your home for this type of boiler energy efficiencies between 78% and 82% are still realistic.
